Benjamin Linus is a former member of the DHARMA Initiative and former leader of a group known alternately as the Others and the Hostiles. Born 32 miles outside of Portland, Oregon, Ben first came to the Island where DHARMA and his people were located as a preteen living with his abusive, alcoholic father. A nearly fatal run-in with a man DHARMA claimed was a Hostile was the catalyst for Ben joining the Hostiles as a teenager. After many years of living as a double agent, Ben assumed succeeded Charles Widmore as leader of the Hostiles around the year 1993 after the Hostiles purged those DHARMA members who had not defected to the Hostiles. This leadership came to an end in the year 2004 when Oceanic flight 815 crashed on the Island, bringing with it Ben's successor, John Locke. First impressions paint the adult Ben Linus as mild-mannered, polite, and kind. He is not kind. He is more often malicious than not, motivated by a need to maintain power and control over the Island and over those who can help him achieve his goals. He is more skilled and knowledgeable in manipulation, combat, and the ways of the Island and of the world than he lets on. Keep an eye on him all you want, but no matter how hard you scrutinize him he'll still find a way to trick you.
